Legislative Budget Proposal Will Raise Property Taxes and Damage District’s Ability to Provide Quality Education

This story from today’s Arizona Republic details how the Legislature’s latest budget proposal represents a dramatic cost-shift to homeowners to make up for revenue shortfalls.

Bottom line: we would lose almost $7 million of assessed value (meaning we wouldn’t be able to bond for a complete new school even if voters did approve) AND homeowners in Vail would see 15% increase in their secondary homeowner taxes – instigated by the very legislators who pledged no new taxes.

Vail School District Puts Money Into the Classroom

j0436161A headline in Saturday’s paper proclaimed “Percentage of funds used for classrooms is down” {Arizona Daily Star, 2-28-2009}.

NOT IN VAIL.  As per a recent report from the Auditor General Office (Click on “Full Report with District Pages” under “Arizona Public School Districts’ Dollars Spent in the Classroom Fiscal Year 2008″).

The percentage of money spent in Vail’s classrooms actually went up AND Vail continues to lead all other districts in the Tucson Area in regards to the percentage of money that is spent in classrooms.
